Review: Cold Quarry by Andy Straka

Cold Quarry Cold Quarry by Andy Straka
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

PI Frank Pavlicek is on a new case. This case involves a friend named Chester Carew who ended up dead after a hunting accident, but was it an accident?

Obviously as an old friend of Frank, he sets out to investigate, and he himself gets attacked, making it clear to him that this was no hunting accident. Frank and his friend Jake Toronto start probing to find out what they can. Nicole who is Frank's daughter has been working with him as an investigator learning the ropes, but he sends her back to his office as he needs her there and not in the line of fire.

This story is excellent, the author touches on subjects of white supremacy, shady characters, and both Frank and Jake end up knee deep in trouble. People are dying and not by accident either!

Straka as usual entwines his love of falconry into the story, which in itself makes things different from the normal detective stories. I also love that Straka manages to convey his story without the amount of vulgarities we see in some books, although I am not offended by these some may be and this is not the case in Straka's books, they are good clean stories.

I have to thank Brash Books for allowing me to read this terrific story in return for an honest review. Honestly, these Straka books are a pleasure to read gripping, thrillers that keep you enthralled all the way. Well done to the author on another fabulous story.

REVIEW of Graywullf: Book One of the Dragonspawn Trilogy

My review - rating given 5 Star

This book is amazing, it has it all, loyalties, deceit, friendships, enemies, and some weird and wonderful characters. The main characters are a dark wizard by the name of Lynch, and Lorn Graywullf a warrior.

It seems Lorn Graywolf and his warriors have been sent by their council on all sorts of tasks which have kept them away from their home for over 2 years, but these tasks were never meant to be completed, they were meant to cause their deaths. They have had to fight some terrible battles, heavy storms, and more. During a storm, Lorn pulled a man from the sea and saved him from drowning only to find that he saved a Dark Wizard named Lynch. Lynch has done some horrific deeds in his past which has spanned many lifetimes but he owes Lorn his life and offers to help him get to his home and to help them return their lands to normal after Lynch has told them of the happenings there which are not good.

There are many characters in this story each of whom could warrant their own book, I loved Smilin Jake, his character is particular interesting, Ox is another who seems to be a big silent type but deadly nevertheless. Lorn is a father, and a man oh honour and he is shocked to find that his council has been dishonest and that his people the magrii'ri are suffering terrible things because of them. The real problem is Marsten a member  of the council who has started dealing with another evil dark wizard Timon Blackhelm who is tied to Black Queen.

As you can see there are plenty characters to follow and there is plenty of action in the story to keep you gripped.

Protecting Melody Excerpt

Melody wasn’t sure what to say. She hadn’t thought about it, but now that he put the imagines in her head, they wouldn’t leave. “You’re the least vulnerable man I’ve ever met.” She put every ounce of conviction into her voice as she could.
“You don’t have to—”
Melody interrupted him. “I’m not.” She felt movement under her cheek and lifted her head to see he was laughing.
“You don’t even know what I was going to say.”
“Don’t care. Whatever it was, was going to be crap. You could probably break someone in half if they broke in here. You could hop to the door and down the hall and outrun any fire that dared to try to burn you. If someone knocked, you could have your leg strapped on before they got any words out. In fact . . .” Melody pushed herself up even more and peered down at Tex in the dark room. “I bet you’ve practiced getting your leg on as fast as you can . . . haven’t you?”
When he grinned sheepishly up at her, Melody smiled back and brought her hands up to tickle his sides. “How long? What’s your fastest time?”
She let out a girly shriek when he flipped her over and trapped her hands in one of his above her head.
“There I was, getting all touchy feely with you and you had to go and ruin it.” His words were said with a smile and a twinkle in his eye, but Melody still immediately felt bad.
“Seriously, Tex, I’m sorry you feel that way, but If I had my pick between all your friends and you, as to who would be with me in this hotel room right now, I’d still pick you. You make me feel safe. Two legs, one arm, no legs, no arms. I’d still pick you.”
Without a word, Tex leaned down and kissed Melody deeply and with all the emotion he couldn’t figure out how to put into words. Her trust meant the world to him. Since his surgery, he’d always felt somehow less than his other SEAL friends. Two sentences was all it took to bring back his self-esteem.
Not letting the kiss morph into anything more, it still seemed too soon, Tex turned again until they’d resumed their earlier positions.
When they’d settled down, and just as Melody was slipping back into sleep, once again she heard Tex whisper, “Twenty-nine seconds.”
Melody merely smiled, turned her head and kissed his chest, and laid her cheek back down without a word. She’d known in her gut he’d practiced putting his prosthetic on.

Review: Slim To None

Slim To None Slim To None by Freya Barker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well I expected this to be a great book after reading For Dust by the same author, and believe me it was great. I loved the characters and how things developed between them.

The main character Emma Young has disabilities which make her mobility an issue and she uses a walking frame, she is a very loving mother of 1 adult child who has been left behind when Emma moved away for a new start. You have to love the fact that we have an older heroine in this book, instead of some young bimbo who always gets the guy and makes you sick. Emma loves to bake and she has found a great outlet for that, baking for her best friends cafe, she gets a little boost of income and she adores helping her friend.

A normal life as best as she could expect until one day this handsome hunk of a man appears and her life becomes complicated/ He is FBI and on a case, but little does she realise he is the mystery caller she had a bit of phone sex with recently. Gus the FBI agent is chasing information and he is there to track down someone but little does he realise when he is hitting on Emma that she is that person, nor that she is the phone sex lady.

Well not to go into too much detail this story is not all about romance and sex, it is a romance thriller I would say with plenty twists and turns, plenty ups and downs, and poor Emma endures more than her fair share of troubles. This is an amazing read that you will not forget in a hurry.

Synopsis
How did I get here?
Of course I know the answer, but if those bastards Fate and Karma truly do hold the cards then I wish I knew where the hell I went wrong?
There’s no crossroad for me anymore because I’m kneeling on the floor at the hands of a monster. My choices along with my dignity are about to be taken and there’s little I can do for myself.
The harsh bite of the concrete under my knees and the cage that surrounds it is a cruel reminder of my past. A past which follows me wherever I go despite my best efforts to remain in the shadows. One thing for certain is that no matter what happens, no matter where this takes me or if I get out alive- Ryder will always fight for me.
I’m not on my own anymore. I have a strong man who loves me and Callaghan Security behind me.
Surrendering is not an option, and retribution may not be my answer.
This is a reckoning.
I will find the answers and survive long enough to reclaim what I lost. My intent is pure and if I’m worthy enough fate will grant me the one thing I may not deserve.
Redemption.

About the author
I am a thirty year old woman who loves books. Not just reading them, but books themselves. I have had a weird obsession with libraries and maps since I was a child.
Perhaps I can call it fate that I wrote my first book about a woman enters more than one address into her GPS throughout the story?
Sunny days and wine make me happy, and when I'm not enjoying the wine you can usually find me reading or making crafts with my six year old.

Irons by MJ Fields

Jax

I was born and bred to be the man I am today. My father and his father were both graduates from The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. Both went on to become helicopter pilots. Both had seen plenty of action. Both had met and caused devastation. Both men, who I respect more above all, had served and protected the United States and her people honorably for decades.

My best friend, William Cruz, who attended the academy with me, had flown beside me, had lived the same life as I had and shared the same ambitions in life, was gone now. This was not part of the plan. Will and I were supposed to have each other’s backs, support each other and never let anything supersede our bond.

Francesca

I sat on Norfolk Beach needing to feel close to him on the anniversary of his death. It was a beautiful day in May and I was cutting class. I had done the same every year since he passed.

Jaxson Irons was only supposed to be in Pensacola for a year. But now three years later I still hadn't heard from him. I saw a man running down the beach and I knew immediately who it was.

Jaxson didn't respond the way I had dreamed he would. He told me we would catch up someday soon. I stood and watched until he was gone.

Thump, thump. I placed my hand on my chest as I felt my heart beat again for what felt like the first time in three years. Thump, thump. I felt the blood moving quickly through my body. It’s heat once again present. Thump, thump. I looked up at the sky and let out a breath. A breath that I had been holding forever. Thump, thump.

I felt tears fall down my face as I raised my hands in the air and laughed out loud.

Love Survives by Jennifer Foor

Imagine being in love with the same girl since you were ten years old, only to have her fall for your twin instead. This story is rocky.

It will rip you apart and possibly put you back together again.

I know this because it's my story.

The pain and anguish experienced in this is what it was like to hold onto hope that some day we'd find each other again. I won't sugar coat the details of what I went through to have her, nor will I apologize for any actions that led me right back into her life.

Sometimes love isn't enough.

For me, it took some bad experiences, a little fate, and a lot of time.

This book follows Love's Suicide. It can be read by itself as a stand alone.
